POTTY about POTTER or Why is HARRY a hero

Spanning across time and cultural boundaries, the hero figure is the culmination of human (or even superhuman) potential. Every society has hero figures and though these figures may seem superficially different from one another, all are defined by certain aspects of their life’s journeys and their places in society.

Harry Potter serves as a successful role model for its readers, who are able to relate to Potter in many ways. Harry Potter’s struggles in school, his relationships with his friends and his less-than-perfect home life away from Hogwarts all contribute to Harry’s “everyman” status. Even those not blessed with talents in magic can relate to a student who gets stressed about school and frustrated with school rules. Despite aspects of Harry Potter’s normalcy, he is undoubtedly outstanding in many ways. The traits that separate Harry from his peers are characteristics which reveal our current society’s ideals, especially concerning what is expected of children and adolescents. The author J.K.Rowling maintained that Harry is a suitable real-life role model for children. "The advantage of a fictional hero or heroine is that you can know them better than you can know a living hero, many of whom you would never meet […] if people like Harry and identify with him, I am pleased, because I think he is very likeable."

Harry is the main hero and doesn't have many fears. In the third book however, he meets a Dementor on the Hogwarts Express. After this encounter, Professor Lupin has the class face a Boggart which takes the shape of whatever that particular person fears the most. At first Harry thought of Voldemort, but remembers the Dementor which becomes his worst fear. In the book it is stated how it is ironic that the worst thing Harry fears is fear itself.

Harry Potter is not physically strong or violent. Instead he is loyal, caring, brave, selfless, kind, good at sports, and humble. J.K.Rowling said that Harry's two worst character flaws are "anger and occasional arrogance", but that Harry is also innately honorable. "He's not a cruel boy. He's competitive and he's a fighter. He doesn't just lie down and take abuse. But he does have native integrity, which makes him a hero to me. He's a normal boy but with those qualities most of us really admire."
